Storms with torrential rain blocked motorways and railways in southern France on Tuesday.

A person was still missing in the Gard department in the evening and a worker who was struck by lightning was slightly injured, the prefecture in Nîmes said.

Initially, two people were missing.

Sections of the flooded motorway between Nîmes and Montpellier were temporarily closed and thousands of drivers were stranded.

Rail traffic between the two cities was also interrupted.

As the railway operator SNCF announced, slipped rubble blocked the tracks, other sections were completely under water.

A restart is sometimes only possible on the weekend.

Further heavy rainfall was also expected on Wednesday, and a storm warning of the second highest level orange was issued.

All schools in the department should be closed on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin arrived in the affected region that evening. "I assure the residents who are affected by the storm, all my support and call for the greatest caution over the next few days." 900 firefighters and civil protection workers have been deployed on 450 missions in the region.
