A first school dedicated to the mountaineering profession was born in France.

It is located at an altitude of 1,650 meters on the Sulens mountain pasture in the Aravis massif in Haute-Savoie.

Its objective: to train the actors of the mountain of tomorrow and to give birth to vocations, reports

France Bleu Pays de Savoie

, this Monday.

"It's true that we are losing pastures, we are losing farmers ... If all the students who pass through here have a passion for the pastures, our mountain agriculture is saved," says Marie-Louise Donzel-Gonet, breeder and vice-president for agriculture in the Haute-Savoie department.

"It's a school of life"

Since last year, the Alpage Ecole has welcomed nearly 120 apprentice breeders and cheese makers.

During the summer, they are busy running the school's production.

“They learn the mountaineering profession from A to Z. It's a school of life, life in the mountain pastures,” adds Caroline Moreno, deputy director of the agricultural school of Contamine-sur-Arve.

One week per year, each student learns the basics of the trade and moves from theory to practice.

In total, it is especially necessary to take care of 40 dairy cows on 34 hectares of pastures, 16 hectares of moors and 15 hectares of forests.
