Thursday, “coastal towns have a role to play” in preserving biodiversity and thus avoiding dramatic consequences for the coast.

In line with its “climate air energy” plan, the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolis actually intends to take charge of its ecological future.

"Faced with environmental and climatic emergencies, it is time to take a new step," exclaimed the president of the metropolis, Christian Estrosi, presenting an action plan for the coming years, before hosting the meeting of the economy of the sea, next Tuesday and Wednesday.

A protected marine area, from the airport to Cap de Nice

In a desire to "protect the natural coastline" and thus the sanctuary of Pelagos, a maritime space of 87,500 km² which is the subject of an agreement between Italy, Monaco and France for the protection of dolphins and whales , the metropolis will create a protected maritime area, from the airport to Cap de Nice.

"Within this area, we will integrate a membership zone with more flexible regulations to enhance the value of artisanal and sustainable fishing and make fishermen actors in the efficient management of this protected perimeter," said Christian Estrosi. .

In addition, a "real" prud'homie will be created in the port of Nice, as well as an auction "typical of Mediterranean ports".

Fishing harvests will be integrated into the short circuits of the city's territorial food plan to “eat local and better, for our health and that of the oceans”.

Total elimination of disposable plastic by 2024

"In January 2024, I will ban the distribution of disposable plastic to all commercial activities on the territory of the metropolis," said the mayor of Nice. This will be the last step in the “disposable plastic eradication” program. The first phase will begin in January 2022 in Nice with a total ban on single-use plastic "in administrative buildings, in public contracts and in public domain occupancy agreements, this is already the case in canteens," a detailed Christian Estrosi. In 2023, this measure will be extended to shops and supermarkets.

"We will no longer sign any authorization to occupy the public domain without the guarantee that the bags, cups, cutlery, plastic straws are no longer distributed", warned the president of the metropolis.

At the same time, a labeling and support campaign for “zero plastic” merchants in Nice will be launched by January 2022 to promote those who get involved.

The requalification of the port of Nice

According to the mayor of Nice, “too much space is given to vehicles” in the port area, between traffic and parking.

More broadly, the metropolis wants to "act on the main sources of pollution" in this place.

To do this, all ferry stops will be on the quai du commerce to the east, boulevard Stalingrad will run in both directions in order to eliminate traffic on the quai des Deux Emmanuels, which will become a pedestrian definitely. . Christian Estrosi also wishes to "dissuade ferry users from transporting their personal vehicle there" and wants to set up "a carbon tax of 60 euros per stopover and per vehicle for those who embark and disembark" on the polluter pays principle. According to the data cited, a tonne of CO2 is emitted by the ferry at that time, "it is the equivalent of a return trip from Brussels to New York". He assured "to reinvest this tax directly in the ecological transition and the requalification of the port".

The metropolis wants to go further in its elimination of CO2 emissions.

Within three years, it wants to go from its already established standard of 0.1% sulfur for zero-emission ships, from the coast to 3,000 meters offshore.

The port will be restructured, notably with the redevelopment of the Lighthouse car park with a vegetated surface.

The president of the metropolis also announced the relaunch of the maritime shuttle project between Nice and Monaco but also the creation of a nautical base "of excellence" with, among other things, a real Yacht-club and a 50-meter swimming pool.
