When

Luis García Berlanga

won the Goya for Best Director in 1994, he claimed from the rostrum the only "native Spanish genre": popular comedy. What film would the legendary film director not have come up with if he had known that, years later, his hometown would host the

Goya Awards

gala

in tribute to him, in a

Palau de les Arts

that has lived through everything in the past: the collapse of its scene, the detachment of the ceramic pieces from its casing and even a police search with a helicopter included that ended with the arrest of its former mayor.

The Valencian opera theater will host the Goya gala on February 12, 2022 as the finishing touch to the Berlanga Year, which started this year to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the Valencian maestro who has left unforgettable titles such as

Welcome, Mister Marshall!

or

The executioner

. But, above all, the 36th edition of the Goya will be the "reunion of cinema with the public", in the words of

Mariano Barroso

, president of the Film Academy.

"The moment has come", he stressed optimistically this Friday during the presentation of the gala. Unlike what happened last year in Malaga due to the pandemic,

the public will return to Valencia

, although in a more limited way. In the first place, because the setting is: the 1,500 seats in the Palau de les Arts will not even provide enough space for the 1,900 academics. The number of spectators will thus be far from the 3,000 who used to gather at the event in Madrid. Second, it will be necessary to take into account the capacity restrictions by the Covid.

Of course, the glamor will return. Guaranteed. Will we see a

glamorous gala

like the ones before the pandemic? They have asked Barroso directly. His answer: yes. "The Goya red carpet is the great red carpet in Spain, and the exterior of the Palau de les Arts is perfect," he insisted.

The return of the public will not be the only novelty, because for the first time it will bet on a

new gala model that will avoid the classic concept of the single presenter or the pair of presenters

.

"It will be a more lively gala," according to Barroso, with many more presenters in practice.

"Each one of them will have its leading role and all sensibilities will be represented: comedy, auteur cinema ...", has advanced the head of the Academy, who has preferred to keep the mystery and not reveal any name at the moment.

In addition, it will be used to deploy a whole program of parallel activities in Valencia that will allow the screening of the nominated films or the meetings of directors and actors with the public.

In short, he will "reconnect with the Goya".

In this case, both the Generalitat Valenciana and the Provincial Council and the Valencia City Council will pay a

fee of 2 million euros

that includes the displacement of production and the transfer of academics to Valencia.

Valencia started working on the project in 2019, just before the pandemic ruined all plans.

So, as the mayor Joan Ribó summed up, "as your mayor that I am ... we welcome you with joy".
