As early as 1986, the gold rods, gold masks, and broken pieces of gold leaf unearthed from the sacrificial pits No. 1 and No. 2 of the Sanxingdui site proved the unique gold-using customs of the ancient Shu people.

Last year, after a new round of excavation work began in which six sacrificial pits were discovered at the Sanxingdui site, gold artifacts appeared again frequently.

According to reports, archaeologists not only found huge golden masks and gold leaf pieces scattered all over the floor in Sacrificial Pit No. 5, but also found more than 360 pieces of gold leaf artifacts in Sacrificial Pit No. 8.

They are made into fish shapes and other different shapes, with perforations on them, which can be hung on sacred trees for decoration; some can be pasted on the surface of containers or religious artifacts, and some surfaces are also engraved with exquisite patterns.

It is worth mentioning that among the more than 10 gold wares unearthed in Sacrificial Pit No. 3, the most important one is the complete gold mask.

Xu Feihong, the person in charge of the excavation of the No. 3 sacrificial pit at the Sanxingdui site and a lecturer at the School of Letters of Shanghai University, introduced that this golden mask was discovered during the Dragon Boat Festival this year.

At that time, after extracting a piece of bronze lizard, the archaeologists found that there was a hidden color underneath, which meant that there should be gold objects under it.

At the end of June, archaeologists extracted the crumpled golden mask and immediately asked a professional repairer to restore it.

What is gratifying is that this gold ware is relatively intact. It is 40 cm wide and about 27 cm high. It is the largest piece of intact gold masks found in Sanxingdui.

It is understood that in a new round of archaeological excavations in the sacrificial area of the Sanxingdui site, a broken golden mask was found in the sacrificial pit No. 8.

Combined with the heads of people wearing golden masks unearthed in Sanxingdui in 1986, these golden masks may also be used as decorations over the heads.
