We start from afar.

When we look at the percentage of agricultural land devoted to organic today in Hauts-de-France, we can estimate that the region is lagging behind.

But if we observe the evolution of this percentage for 5 years, we realize that we are not so bad.

This is the overall finding that the Regional Organic Agriculture Observatory draws up through the 2020 report published this Thursday.

Nationally, organic farming represents a little less than 10% of the useful agricultural area (UAA) while in Hauts-de-France, this percentage drops to 2.5%. Except that in just 5 years, this surface has been multiplied by 2.6. “The region has shown uninterrupted growth for several years,” notes the Observatory. The same goes for the number of farms operated organically, which increased by more than 13% between 2019 and 2020. Note, however, that more than a third of these organic farms are in fact mixed, that is to say. say that they keep a part of so-called conventional agriculture.

But producing organic is not everything, it is also a question of not losing all the virtuous benefits by sending the products to the other end of France to be processed.

And in this area too, the region is making progress.

The number of organic operators operating downstream of the agricultural sector increased by almost 4% compared to 2019. The downside comes from the distribution channels, in particular organic stores, the number of which stands at 144, down 4 %.
