Louvre Abu Dhabi has announced its second exhibition this year under the title "Dragon and Phoenix - Centuries of Inspiration between Chinese and Islamic Cultures", which will receive visitors from October 6 to February 12. The exhibition highlights the cultural and artistic exchange between the Islamic and Chinese civilizations from the eighth century to the eighteenth century. The exhibition allows visitors to discover the meeting of cultures, by contemplating more than 200 pieces of art from the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Guimet Museum, as well as works on loan from 12 museums and cultural institutions.

The exhibition creates a dialogue between pieces of art from two worlds rich in culture, arts and sciences: China (the dragon) on one side and the Islamic world (the phoenix) on the other. The exhibition showcases connections, artistic influences and never-before-seen fascinating stories, centered on more than 800 years of exchange through both land and sea trade routes, from the time Arab merchants established their first headquarters in Canton in the 8th century to the beginning of the 18th century. The exhibition takes visitors on a journey from North Africa, through the Arabian Peninsula, Central Asia and the Indian Ocean, to China and Vietnam, discovering a history of mutual inspiration between the two civilizations in terms of art and culture on the one hand, and in the production of goods on the other.

The Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, said: “The Louvre Abu Dhabi and the prestigious partner museums have been distinguished by organizing prominent exhibitions that draw attention to exchange and interaction between different cultures.

Given the location of Abu Dhabi and its historical and current position as a crossroads of trade routes, it is obvious that this exhibition will be held here in the Louvre Abu Dhabi.”

The exhibition includes a variety of art pieces.

More than 200 pieces of art are divided into five sections: the first four sections follow a historical chronology, while the fifth section focuses on the literary traditions of calligraphy and poetry, the exhibition highlighting the history of this fluid global context of artistic and cultural exchanges at the time.
