From 1,200 kilometers to 10 kilometers, the distance between the animal protector and the wild Siberian tiger and leopard

Many parties initiated the "Siberian Tigers and Leopards Return to the Northeast" public welfare project. The Northeast Tigers and Leopards National Park has detected 27 wild Siberian tigers and 42 Siberian leopards.

  Rubber shoes, camouflage, dry food.

On September 3, Meng Qinghai, who was nearly 60 years old, carefully checked the equipment used to patrol the mountains that day as usual.

Wild Siberian tigers and Siberian leopards are endangered animals in the world and are extremely rare.

According to Lao Meng, there have been many traces of Siberian tigers and Siberian leopards visiting ecological fields recently. They chased wild sika deer, wild boar and other herbivorous animals all the way down the mountain.

This ecological field planted by Beijing technology company RELX provides a basic food source for the healthy operation of the surrounding ecosystem.

Zhen'anling Village, Hunchun City, Jilin Province, is located in the hinterland of Northeast Tiger and Leopard National Park, with a straight line distance of more than 1,200 kilometers from Beijing.

In 2020, RELX cooperated with the China Green Foundation to launch the "Northeast Tigers and Leopards Returning to the Northeast" project. Here, 225 acres of corn and soybean ecological fields have been funded to establish a "canteen" for sika deer, wild boar and other herbivorous wild animals.

Only by feeding them can we raise more Siberian tigers and leopards.

However, protecting Siberian tigers and leopards is much more than planting ecological fields. In this Korean village with a permanent population of less than 90 people, protecting tigers and leopards, maintaining natural vegetation, and solving villagers’ livelihoods are all problems.

The patrol team trekking and wading 10 kilometers every day

There are 27 wild Siberian tigers and 42 Siberian leopards.

This is the latest monitoring data on the presentation board of the Siberian Tiger and Leopard National Park in Zhen'anling Village.

This national park with an area of approximately 1,461,200 hectares spans the two provinces of Jilin and Heilongjiang. The area of Jilin Province is 101.43 hectares, accounting for 69%, and the area of Heilongjiang Province is 446,900 hectares, accounting for 31%.

It is the most important area with the largest number of wild Siberian tigers and Siberian leopards in my country, the most frequent activities.

"I have really seen a Siberian tiger. It was near the monitoring station on the evening of March 20th this spring." When talking about his encounter with the Siberian tiger, although it has been almost half a year, Lao Meng said that Zhong still can't hide his excitement.

Lao Meng's excitement, in addition to his encounter with the rare Siberian tiger, also stems from his perseverance in this area all the year round.

Lao Meng said that his patrol team has a total of 20 people, which are basically all the strength of Zhenanling Village.

They go into the mountains for more than 6 hours a day to patrol the mountains in groups of two, and the average distance of trekking and wading is more than 10 kilometers.

However, going up the mountain is not as easy as imagined.

There is no obvious road, and the slope from the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain is very steep, and it is easy to slide down if you don't catch the surrounding trees.

When asked whether there are material rewards for patrolling the mountains every day, Lao Meng showed a slightly "shy" smile on his face. Engraving the patrol team', there will be 200 yuan lost work pay for patrolling the mountain every day, and everyone's enthusiasm for participating in patrols is even higher."

Lao Meng said that the "Rezek patrol team" was also part of the "Northeast Tigers and Leopards Returning to the Northeast" project of Rekie.

While the patrol team regularly goes into the mountains to clean the animal traps, they also assist the scientific research team in collecting tiger and leopard tracks and other data.

The pilot work of protecting tigers and leopards to create safe habitats not only includes compensation for damaged farmland, but also focuses on promoting the development of local ecological service industries, taking the opportunity to promote the transformation of rural industries and increase the employment of villagers.

Work like patrol team and beekeeping not only provides villagers with a stable source of income, but also improves villagers' tiger and leopard protection capabilities and ecological service levels, and at the same time lays the foundation for local ecological education.

According to the reporter's understanding, the eco-tourism, nature research and other projects in Zhenanling Village will also be implemented in the near future.

  Doctor's 15-year waiting

Unlike Lao Meng who saw the Siberian tiger with his own eyes, Feng Limin, 70 kilometers away from Zhenanling Village, was not so lucky.

As an associate professor in the School of Life Sciences at Beijing Normal University, Feng Limin has been involved in conservation research of Amur tigers and leopards in Jilin for more than 15 years. He has never seen wild Amur tigers in the wild so far.

This young scholar in his early 40s speaks very fast and talks endlessly when he talks about wild Siberian tigers.

Because he often goes to the mountains for inspections, he is very familiar with the situation in Zhen'anling Village.

According to Feng Limin, after years of hard work, the number of wild Siberian tigers and leopards has now increased significantly.

In the Key Laboratory of Conservation Ecology of Siberian Tigers and Leopards National Park in the Hunchun Campus of Yanbian University, through more than 30,000 monitoring equipment distributed in the field, you can clearly see the activities of Siberian tigers and leopards every day.

When you come to the Siberian tiger and leopard observatory distributed in the wild, you can see the footprints of the Siberian tiger on the spot.

When asked what problems still exist in the protection of wild Siberian tigers and leopards, Feng Limin said that tiger protection is not a question of quantity, but a problem of biodiversity, it is the relationship between Siberian tigers and leopards and nature, and the relationship with people.

Feng Limin said that in the past, the villagers' enthusiasm for participating in the protection of Siberian tigers and leopards was not very high, because wild animals often damaged the villagers' crops, and the relationship between humans and animals was often in a state of opposition.

With the launch of the "Northeast Tigers and Leopards Returning to the Northeast" project here, the villagers who suffered losses will receive equivalent compensation, which greatly eases the antagonistic relationship between wild animals and people.

According to Feng Limin, in order to let more people know the importance of protecting the wild Amur tigers and leopards, its own scientific research team also cooperated with RELX to build rural laboratories and popular science centers in Zhenanling Village to create ecological education and research. Base etc.

"There are many companies that fund the Northeast Tiger and Leopard Conservation Project, but only RELX has implemented the actions in the fields and in the villagers' homes." Feng Limin said.

Repay the society with a cumulative investment of over 60 million yuan

Why should an electronic atomization company participate in the protection of Northeast tigers and leopards?

Wang Ying, the founder and CEO of RELX, said that the company has continued to invest in repaying the society in various ways.

The "Northeast Tigers and Leopards Back to the Northeast" project was voted by all RELXK employees among many community service projects.

In December 2020, RELX came to Zhen’anling Village for investigation and found that with the rapid growth of wild animal populations, the losses caused by wild boars, sika deer and other ungulates entering the farmland to eat local villagers’ crops are getting more and more serious. It will have a negative impact on the local communities and people's understanding and participation in the protection of Siberian tigers and leopards.

Now, as the ecological fields planted by enterprises have seen signs of visits by Siberian tigers and other wild animals more and more frequently, it shows that the local ecosystem is functioning healthily.

Wang Ying said that the biggest advantage of RELX participating in the protection of Northeast tigers and leopards lies in its innovative thinking mode. Participating in the project of Northeast tigers and leopards protection, after a long period of field investigation and full demonstration, finally participated in it deeply.

When asked how to participate in the plan to protect the Northeast tigers and leopards in the next step, Gao Wenxin, head of corporate social responsibility of RELX, said that on the basis of the current investment of 1 million yuan per year, RELX will further increase its investment and actively guide more employees. , Partners and users participate in this charity activity.

In fact, since its establishment, RELX has continuously used innovation to solve social pain points and create a sustainable development environment for the industry and society.

RELX has invested more than 60 million yuan in repaying the society.

On September 2, RELX released the "RELX Social Responsibility Report 2020-2021", covering the company's important actions in the areas of minor protection, scientific research, low-carbon energy conservation, environmental protection, and rural revitalization.

"How to give back to the society is the softest and most powerful subject of RELX. We will put our feedback to the community into action again and again, and try our best to create greater social value." Wang Ying said.
