French star Brigitte Bardot paid tribute to the late actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, who died on Monday at the age of 88, confirming to AFP that she was thinking of him and she was "sad".

A statement from her foundation quoted her, "I am deeply saddened, as his chibi, who was his last and most faithful companion.

Thinking of him, I used to love him.

I miss him and I don't want to talk about it anymore, the intense pain is silent.”

The two stars, who are considered icons of French cinema, participated in more than one movie, including the movie "Lisanor Celebrity" (1961), directed by Michel Poiron.

The two became closer over the years, and in 2012 Belmondo adopted his chibi dog from the Bardo Foundation.

On Thursday, France will hold a national honor at the "Invalides" complex in Paris for the late actor, whose credit includes about 80 films.
