Sandwich bread, burger or hot dog bread, bagels, wraps ... In an article published on Monday,

60 million consumers

announced that they had carried out tests on around thirty references of industrial breads, whether large brands or private labels.

According to this study, traces of pesticides were detected in the majority of cases.

350 molecules were analyzed.

In sandwich breads, the tests notably revealed the presence of cypermethrin, a herbicide classified as “irritant and potential endocrine disruptor”, but also of piperonyl butoxide, a synergizer widely used in cereal farms.

The use of the latter is admittedly safe, because it reduces the use of active molecules, but this substance remains undesirable.

No presence of ethylene oxide

Organic sandwich breads are also concerned.

Traces of cypermethrin were found in “Hot Dog Breads” from Fournée Dorée, in U brand “Sesame Bagels”, and in Auchan “Sesame Bagels to garnish”.

But each time, the quantity observed does not exceed the limits authorized by law, explains the magazine, which nevertheless denounces an excessive use of pesticides.

Good news, however.

In this study, no trace of ethylene oxide (ETO), a food disinfectant, was detected in the products tested.

This product has been at the heart of a health scandal for several months and banned in Europe.

Be careful, however, with products containing psyllium or guar gum.

These two additives could be contaminated with ETO.

In addition, no mycotoxin molecules, toxins produced by certain molds and which can cause vomiting, anemia or even convulsions, have been found.

Another good news.

These analyzes also focused on the nutritional quality of these industrial breads.

If 25 of the products tested obtain a Nutri-Score A or B, they remain too salty and low in fiber.

Likewise, most contain added sugars, as well as several preservatives, emulsifiers or texturing agents.
