• From this start, computers are given to each student entering second or first year of CAP.

  • This is an initiative of the Pays-de-la-Loire regional council.

Cost of the measure: 24 million euros per year.

"Frankly, we are lucky, within a year we had nothing," laughs Maxence, who was returning to Lycée Nicolas-Appert this Thursday morning in Orvault, near Nantes. This is indeed one of the main novelties in the lycées of Pays-de-la-Loire: laptops are offered to every second year student, as well as to each first year of CAP. Fifteen high schools will be delivered until September 14, to start. Then all the others will follow until the end of November. In total: no less than 48,000 young people will thus be equipped with a new PC that they will be able to keep at the end of their schooling.

Objective: to provide all students with a "modern and efficient tool for learning" and thus "fight against digital inequalities".

“The future is you, the youth.

And we want the best for you ”, proclaims Christelle Mor Anglais (LR), president of the regional council, to the young beneficiaries.

"Not everyone has the means"

Manon is precisely one of the first high school students to leave with this Hewlett-Packard, equipped with about forty software, under her arm. "This is good news, lucky, because not everyone can afford a personal computer," she considers. “I already had one of my own,” says Lisa. I'm going to use this one to work, because that's the point anyway. The other I will keep it for leisure. In another small group, Kevin warns that he won't "share" it with the rest of his family. "Today it becomes essential to work, to organize, especially for internships," he said. Elliot points out that with the past two “rough” school years the students have experienced, “this computer will be quite useful if there is a re-containment. "

But it's not just lessons in the life of a teenager.

"For the web, the videos, our stuff, all that… I think it must work well", is convinced a boy.

"If it runs well I'll install Fifa [the famous football game], that's for sure," adds his friend.

"I'm going to sell it," laughs another voice, close to the teachers.

Fortnite or Fifa on the PC, impossible

The region claims to be "aware" of possible misappropriation of the computer offered.

And if Internet access is “free, unrestricted”, software installation is restricted.

“This computer must remain an educational tool.

If a youngster tries to put Fifa or Fornite, he will get an error message.

If he gets rid of his PC during his schooling, we'll see him too, ”warns François-Xavier Sauve, IT advisor to the regional council.

Support, via the Iceberg association, is offered to all parents and students.

"Some children and parents will need to better understand the interest of the project," says Cyril Markt, trainer at Iceberg.

There is the risk of under-exploiting the tool, especially for the students with the most difficulty.

There is also the legitimate concern that goes with providing an Internet connection to a teenager: offensive content, cyber harassment, etc.

We're here to talk about it and give advice.

»Maintenance is also offered to beneficiaries in the event of a breakdown.

Cost of the whole measure: 24 million euros per year, financed by the regional council.
