The methods for measuring body temperature vary between the mouth, the ear, the armpit, the forehead, or another area. Regardless of the method used, the measurement must be taken correctly.

The German Commodity Testing Authority indicated that obtaining accurate measurement values depends on the quality of the temperature gauges and how to deal with them.

A test conducted by the authority’s experts on many measuring instruments showed that the measurement accuracy was very good for most of them, and the main differences were in the practical application, especially with the models operating with infrared technology, which users found it difficult to measure.

In the test, the subjects were asked to measure the temperature using a contact thermometer in their mouth, and the result was reliable, provided that the tip of the thermometer was placed in the back area under the tongue, and in general, eating hot or cold food before the measurement violated the accuracy of the given values.

Body temperature can be measured through the ear, and the correct technique is a condition to obtain correct measurement values, as the sensor must record the heat radiated by the eardrum, and from which the temperature is derived.

In order for this to work reliably, experts advise pulling the ear from the back up a little while holding the device, as this pull helps to make the ear canal straight and creates a “free view” of the eardrum.

Infrared thermometers measure the body's radiant temperature on the forehead from a distance of two or three centimeters, and here it is necessary to know that sweat and dirt on the skin affect the radiation, and thus the reading of the thermometer.

To get the most accurate measurement possible, it should be measured on dry skin, and anyone who exercises, or has been outside in low temperatures, should wait half an hour at room temperature before taking the measurement.
