Contrary to what was initially feared, there was no Ebola infection in Ivory Coast.

The finding in one patient was a misdiagnosis, announced the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday evening.

The government of the West African state said that recent tests by the Pasteur Institute in Lyon had not revealed any evidence of the virus.

Previously, the Pasteur Institute in Ivory Coast had diagnosed Ebola.

As a result, health authorities declared the first Ebola case since 1994 in the former French colony on August 15 and started a vaccination campaign shortly afterwards.

With the new results from the laboratory in Lyon, the WHO was of the opinion that the patient had no Ebola virus disease, it was now said.

Further analyzes of the actual cause of the disease would be carried out.

The 18-year-old had traveled overland from Labé in Guinea to the economic metropolis of Abidjan in Ivory Coast and was treated there in hospital on August 12 after a fever attack.

Guinea had only declared itself ebola-free on June 19.

Twelve people had died there from the virus disease since February 14.
