Since July 1, Slovenia has assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

This six-month mandate represents an essentially symbolic charge, but it comes at the very moment when the small country resulting from the dissolution of the former Yugoslavia, bordering Austria, Italy and Hungary, is in full swing authoritarian.

Led by the ultra-conservative Janez Janša, a close friend of Viktor Orbán, Slovenia is now aligned with the reactionary policies of Budapest and the Visegrád Group.

Thirty years after gaining independence in 1991, it no longer has anything of the “Switzerland of the Balkans” that many dreamed of during independence.
