Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced his desire to further limit the attribution of French nationality to children born in Mayotte, during a visit to the Indian Ocean island with the Minister of Overseas Territories Sébastien Lecornu, this Monday.

Since 2018 and the “Asylum and Immigration” law, there is already an exception for the right to land in Mayotte, in the grip of massive immigration from neighboring Comoros.

A child born in the territory can thus claim French nationality on the condition that at least one of the two parents has been in a regular and uninterrupted situation in the territory for three months before the birth.

Strengthening surveillance

With the new bill specific to Mayotte, which must be presented to the Council of Ministers before the end of January 2022, this presence must increase to one year.

"It is a profound and revolutionary change to fight against the attractiveness of Mayotte", explained Gérald Darmin, after a passage on one of the interceptor boats which monitor the arm of the sea between Mayotte and the Union of the Comoros.

To fight against illegal immigration, the ministers also announced the delivery of two new interceptor ships and the strengthening of aerial surveillance to prevent small motor boats, called kwassas-kwassas, from continuing to reach the island. .

The government also wants to allow patrollers to go to adjacent areas, to intercept smugglers earlier.

In order to fight against the construction of shantytowns housing illegal aliens, a proposal also aims to extend the flagrance period making it possible to destroy these tin huts more quickly, from 48 hours to 96 hours.
