Flood in Upper Bavaria: Disaster declared for a town in the Erding district

After heavy rainfall, the district of Erding declared a disaster for the city of Dorfen.

The Upper Bavarian city announced that around 250 people had to leave their homes in the Oberdorfen district.

Those affected were found in a gym.

The fire brigades are on site with 600 emergency services to pump empty cellars and to clear flooded streets again.

Around 2,300 sandbags were filled to protect the village.

The district authority made it clear that the evacuation was also carried out as a precaution.

"But we want and have to make sure, the latest events in Germany show that," said District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer (CSU).

"Up to two meters high"

The northern district of Freising was also affected by the flood: in the municipality of Au in der Hallertau alone, the fire brigade was out on more than 50 missions by Monday afternoon, according to a spokesman.

"The water was up to two meters high in some cellars," said the spokesman.

Several streets were flooded after, among other things, the Abens had overflowed.

There were initially no reports of injuries.

According to a spokesman, the Therme Erding had to accommodate around 400 guests of the connected hotel in other establishments after the building's basement filled with water. As a result, the power failed there, and the thermal bath's wave pool no longer works, said the spokesman. How long the repairs would take was initially unclear.

In the district of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, according to the district office, the municipality of Wolnzach in particular was affected by the floods.

There, after up to 60 liters of rain per square meter, several cellars filled up during the night, said the district office.

Many fire departments are in use.

"In the Wolnzach we currently still have high levels of runoff because the soil is saturated and can hardly absorb any more water," said Matthias Krenauer from the disaster control department at the district office.

The police also reported several storm-related operations in the region on Monday.

Among other things, the Autobahn 94 was fully closed after a landslide between Lengdorf (Erding district) and Dorfen, said a police spokesman.

The clean-up work dragged on for several hours until the afternoon.

After the rivers Ilm and Abens reached the highest flood reporting level four at the gauges in Geisenfeld and Mainburg on Monday afternoon, the district offices in Freising and Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm reported a gradual easing of the situation on site. The neighboring Lower Bavarian district of Kelheim continued to warn of a possible flood of reporting level three.

In southern Upper Bavaria, too, the flood intelligence service and the German Weather Service (DWD) warned of heavy continuous rain and possible floods. Especially in the Chiemgau, precipitation amounts of up to 80 liters per square meter are possible until Tuesday evening, the DWD announced on Monday. After roughly the same amount had been measured in parts of the region since Saturday morning, the weather service warned on Monday of possible floods in streams and smaller rivers as well as flooding of streets. There could also be landslides.
