Early on the 28th, the sky was just fine. Zhang Heshan, 66, is a villager in Chengziyu Village, Haigang District, Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province, and a protector of the Great Wall.

For 43 years, he has been patrolling this section of the Great Wall, which is about 7 kilometers long, on foot every day. On average, he wears a pair of shoes every month.

Cutting down the weeds, picking up the garbage, and reinserting the loose bricks into the gap in the wall... At the same time, prohibiting any man-made damage is the basic "protection duty" that Zhang Heshan has set for herself.

"Father said that the Great Wall saved his life and asked me to guard it." Talking about the reasons for protecting the Great Wall in the first place, Zhang Heshan said that during the Anti-Japanese War, his father was captured by the Japanese army. The Japanese army pushed down from the enemy's building on the Great Wall. Fortunately, his father's clothes were caught by the Great Wall drain and his life was saved.

After that, the Zhang family spontaneously embarked on the road of protecting the Great Wall in their hometown.

As a world cultural heritage, the remains of the Great Wall of China are large in number and widely distributed.

Among them, there is 223.1 kilometers of the Great Wall in Qinhuangdao, Hebei, which is one of the best sections of the Great Wall in the Ming Dynasty.

According to Zhang Heshan, the section of Ming Great Wall he guarded has 23 enemy towers, which were built by Qi Jiguang, a famous general of the Ming Dynasty. At present, it still maintains the unique charm and original appearance of ancient buildings.

"There are often heavy rains on the lofty mountains and the top, sometimes the snowy road is slippery, and there are often a few rolls." Speaking of the experience of guarding the Great Wall, Zhang Heshan laughed and said that the most thrilling one was to find a monument that records the history of the Great Wall. , He walked into the depths of Zachai.

"As soon as I looked up, a thick-mouthed snake was facing me spat out a letter, scared me backwards, and then hit the wild nest on my back, stinging my eyes could not be opened, and my clothes were scratched. When I got home, my girl didn't recognize me."

Persuaded to pass the sheep herders, scare away the brick thieves, to be anxious with others in order to protect the Great Wall.

In 43 years, more than 15,000 days, I often set off as soon as it was light, and when I came back, it was completely dark. The once young man became an "old head".

But Zhang Heshan never gave up. He had an inexplicable complex for the Great Wall.

"I was born at the foot of the Great Wall and played here since I was a kid. I have feelings with these brick gates. I can't watch others destroy it."

Driven by Zhang Heshan, surrounding villagers also joined the ranks of protecting the Great Wall.

Simple persistence, from the wish of a small family to the guardian of the whole village.

The local area has also established a Great Wall protector mechanism, dividing the Great Wall into 18 sections, which are patrolled by 18 villagers in sections.

Nowadays, local villagers rely on the rich tourism resources of the Great Wall to open farmhouses and sell local products.

In January 2019, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage jointly issued the "Great Wall Protection Master Plan". The plan clarified that the focus of the Great Wall protection is the Qin and Han Great Walls and the Ming Great Wall. At the same time, social forces are encouraged to participate in the protection of the Great Wall.

Today, Zhang Heshan is not only a local Great Wall protector, but also a great wall story promoter.

He spent more than ten years sorting out more than 200,000 words of Great Wall survey notes and stories, and assembled them into a book.

"Old people have told me a lot of stories about the Great Wall, and I want to write them down." Taking into account the preferences of young people, Zhang Heshan also used a short video to popularize the Great Wall knowledge for young people and received millions of likes. Netizens praised it as a "live map of the Great Wall".

"As long as I can walk, I must keep on guard, and my children and grandchildren keep on guard." The wind of mountains and seas left traces of years on Zhang Heshan's face, but the story about the Great Wall is continuing.
