The murderer of US Senator Robert F. Kennedy has received the green light for his release.

The relevant body in the US state of California voted in San Diego on Friday for the release of Sirhan Sirhan on parole.

Robert F. Kennedy was shot dead in a Los Angeles hotel during the 1968 presidential campaign.

He was a brother of US President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1963.

Sirhan Sirhan, now 77, was found guilty of the murder of New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy on April 17, 1969.

His sentence was commuted from the death penalty to life imprisonment in 1972.

He applied for release from prison 16 times, and the application was rejected 15 times.

The final decision on a release from prison rests with California Governor Gavin Newsom.

He is presented with the decision of the Release Committee after a 90-day review.
