Mosquito Health: Avoid being their target this summer
Saturated Nurse Everything you need to know about summer ear infections
After spending long months protected by socks and footwear, summer is the time of year when feet are
more exposed than ever to the sun and other external factors that can negatively affect them,
leading to infection and some other pathology that it can affect our health.
So with or without sandals, I invite you to continue reading to end this summer with healthy feet that will save you from an unexpected visit to the podiatrist.
Flip flops, yes or no?
Of course yes, but
with limitations
.
They are a perfectly valid footwear to protect our feet from contagion in humid areas or in spaces where there is usually puddled water, such as common shower areas, changing rooms, access to swimming pools ...
But their abuse is not good.
If we use them to walk long distances, it would not be uncommon for us to end up suffering
pathologies such as plantar fasciitis or sprains
due to their poor foot support and the instability they generate when walking.
Solar protection
Yes, even if we see them down there half buried between the sand of the beach at the foot, they also have to be protected from the sun.
In fact,
getting sunburns on the instep is quite common
because we tend to forget about them ... we remember later when we tried to put on shoes, we felt pain and we discovered a sunburn.
Chafing
Stopping wearing socks will inevitably increase the friction that the shoe material produces on the skin of our feet, something that will result in the well-known chafing.
It is advisable in these cases to
change footwear
to prevent these wounds from getting worse while the skin in that area does not regenerate.
Be careful with the wounds
When walking barefoot on the beach, it is relatively common that we suffer small injuries
when stepping on pieces of shells or when tripping over that rock that we did not expect to find
half buried in the sand.
For most people, these small, unimportant wounds remain there, in a lesion in the epidermis that disappears in a few days with basic hygiene and disinfection care, but for people with diabetes or vascular problems they can be a a major problem if they are not given proper care from day one.
The feet are also hydrated
It is something that we should not forget, but due to the high temperatures typical of summer,
it is advisable to do it at night,
before going to sleep.
For example, while we watch that television series just before going to bed, it is the perfect time to apply (or have a moisturizer applied to us) on both feet giving a small massage for a few minutes.
Remember not to cover your feet with socks afterwards.
Beware of mushrooms ...
There are mainly two fungal infections of the feet,
athlete's foot
and ringworm of the feet, but the one that we are most likely to get as a gift this summer if we do not protect ourselves well is athlete's foot.
It usually appears just under the feet and it must be said in its favor that it is not something serious, but it is very annoying because of the itching that it produces and that it can translate into pain if the skin ends up cracking.
The best prevention: a pair of flip-flops in the pool area and changing rooms and a good thorough drying of the feet.
... and also with the papillomavirus
You may be thinking, but isn't Human Papillomavirus (HPV) a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)? And he is right, but it is that HPV are actually
a family of more than 200 types of viruses
that can cause warts in different parts of the body, some are high risk and can cause cancer and others not. Fortunately, when it affects the feet, it remains in a plantar wart, without worse consequences, but it can cause us pain, especially when walking.
Getting HPV in locker rooms or swimming pools is very easy.
The best prevention is to
always use flip flops, avoid sharing shoes and a towel and keep your feet clean and dry
... And in case it makes its appearance, I recommend a visit to the podiatrist, no remedies taken from the internet.
