Lying topless on the beach has gone out of style in France.

According to a survey carried out by the opinion research institute Ifop, only 19 percent of women lie “topless” in the sun.

The results were published on the international "Topless Day" on August 26th.

Younger women under the age of 25 in particular are worried that they are gawking at without a bikini top or that they are victims of physical or sexual violence.

Every second respondent cited fear of harassment as a reason for not being topless.

46 percent expressed concern about finding their photo on the Internet.

"By not showing themselves topless, these young women seem to have internalized the risks that weigh on those who try to break free from the rules of modesty imposed on women in public places," said Ifop study director François Kraus .

The newspaper "Le Parisien" quoted a retired teacher who was annoyed by the despondency of the younger generation. "We, the elders, fought to give women all options: abortion, taking the pill, working without the man's permission, including the right to show his body like the gentlemen," she said.
