In her speech, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Muhammad Al Qasimi addressed the human dimensions of the refugee issue and its future effects, saying: “In many parts of our world there are still people looking for a homeland, among them young souls who have never understood the meaning of homeland and belonging. It has remnants of tranquility, that stolen homeland dreaming every night of the moment of returning to their country, where they belong, as there are approximately 82.4 million people who have been displaced from their homeland for various reasons. Her Highness pointed out that "it has become necessary for global efforts to unite, in order to identify the causes of asylum, to do everything possible to reduce them, and to consolidate the foundations on which the stability of nations rests." Her Highness explained that "the (Covid-19) crisis has exacerbated the problems of refugee communities, and impeded the refugees' access to basic services, foremost of which is adequate health care, which requires redoubling efforts to confront these challenges."

In his speech during the ceremony, Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees noted that “Her Highness, over the past eight years, has contributed to the establishment of high global standards for humanitarian action, and has changed the lives of more than a million refugees in more than 20 countries around the world.” She pointed out that "Her Highness's exceptional support was not only financially, but also morally and significantly, as she visited refugees in many countries, listened to them closely, and recommended the implementation of many educational, health and women's empowerment initiatives."

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees continued: “Refugees around the world face enormous challenges, as 85% of the total 80 million refugees are hosted by developing countries that are struggling to meet the needs of their citizens, especially in light of the spread of the emerging (Corona) virus, which is what It led to an increase in death rates and the suffering of innocent people, especially children.”

He added: “In 2020, Her Highness made invaluable contributions in the wake of three crises, namely: the (Corona) pandemic, (the explosion of the Port of Beirut) and (the floods in Sudan). We look forward to continuing our journey together towards protecting and assisting refugees around the world.”

The ceremony witnessed the presentation of a report that monitors the qualitative stages in the humanitarian march of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi, since 2013 until today, including words from official and community figures and representatives of refugees, whose lives have changed for the better thanks to Her Highness' efforts and the depth of her vision.

The report dealt with the field visits made by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi to: Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia, and other countries, to provide a comprehensive view of Her Highness' generous efforts. He reviewed the support provided by Her Highness, and through the “Big Heart Foundation” in the Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees in Jordan, which included operating a community center, providing basic relief materials during the winter season, providing general protective supplies, as well as providing health care during emergency cases. The report included the initiatives of Her Highness in Iraq, where she provided the displaced Iraqis, especially during the winter, with basic relief materials, and provided them with shelter units during the Mosul crisis. In addition, Her Highness continued the great humanitarian efforts, and directed the “Big Heart” to provide emergency cash assistance to the displaced Iraqis.

The report revealed the extent of Her Highness’s contribution in the Arab Republic of Egypt to the rehabilitation of a number of schools and hospitals, and the provision of cash assistance to refugee women and refugee families, to the Syrian Arab Republic, where Her Highness directed the rehabilitation of 12 schools and the establishment of a community center in Aleppo, and her white hand reached Turkey Her Highness provided psychological and social support programs for women in the refugee camps there.

The report reviewed the support provided by Her Highness in the African continent, specifically Kenya, where Her Highness directed the rehabilitation of the health care center and the establishment of a boarding secondary school for girls in Kakuma camp, so that efforts will be transferred to the Republic of Sudan, which worked the Big Heart Foundation under the patronage and directives of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi , to provide emergency shelter units for Sudanese displaced people affected by the floods last year 2020, reaching the Republic of Somalia, where health care was provided to the displaced people due to the unrest and tensions that it witnessed.

On the level of the Asian continent, the report showed the humanitarian efforts led by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Muhammad Al Qasimi through the “Big Heart Foundation”, as it provided support to hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and Malaysia, in addition to providing packages and basic and financial assistance to refugees in Indonesia At the same time, Her Highness provided support to Afghan refugees in Pakistan by establishing a community center, in addition to rehabilitating four vocational rehabilitation centers.

The ceremony witnessed an intervention by Hussam Shaheen, Head of Private Sector Partnerships in the Middle East and North Africa at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, in which he said: “In 2012, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Muhammad Al Qasimi’s journey began with UNHCR, when she decided to give one million dollars For internally displaced children in Somalia, and it was in the form of health aid, and since then the journey of giving with Her Highness and its institutions has not stopped, and this generous support continued until Her Highness launched the “Big Heart” campaign, which turned into an institution, to continue the efforts of support provided by Her Highness, and became a source of pride Appreciation from everyone.”
