Faced with the spread of the coronavirus epidemic in Guadeloupe, confinement has been extended until September 19 and the start of the school year, which will take place at a distance, has been postponed to September 13, announced the regional prefect Alexandre Rochatte , during a press conference this Wednesday.

The epidemic is experiencing a "slight decrease" but still remains "worrying", said Valérie Denux, director general of the Regional Health Agency of Guadeloupe, at the same weekly press conference.

"It seems that we have passed the peak of contaminations" but the peak of hospitalizations is still experiencing a lag of several days, she added.

Nearly 6,000 contaminations in one week

During the week ended August 22, less than 6,000 new cases of Covid-19 were identified while 336 people were hospitalized, according to the health bulletin released by the authorities.

"Currently, 80 patients are in intensive care, eleven in critical care (intensive oxygenation) and 310 patients are hospitalized in the medical service on the 406 beds open on the island," said the bulletin, indicating that 43 people were "hospitalized in home on the 50 open places ”.

During the same period, 115 people died from Covid-19 in hospitals in Guadeloupe.

A "reinforced protocol" in schools

During the press conference, the rector of the academy Christine Gangloff-Ziegler gave details on the start of the school year, the postponement of which was announced by the government on Wednesday morning.

"As of September 13, the start of the school year will be mainly remote, with the possibility of providing face-to-face reception for children", on an "ad hoc" basis, she detailed, referring to a working group for establish the modalities of a “reinforced protocol”.

"There are still subjects to settle such as school transport," said the rector.

The containment and curfew in force since July 30 in Martinique have been extended by three additional weeks, until September 19 inclusive, to combat the spread of the coronavirus, according to a press release from the island's prefecture on Tuesday.
