The situation of the Covid-19 epidemic "seems to be stabilizing" for a few days in metropolitan France, according to the government.

The main health indicators stalled on Wednesday.

Even if, with an average of 21,500 cases of new contamination per day, we remain at a level "still far too high", underlined Gabriel Attal, the government spokesman, after the Council of Ministers.

Critical care services, which treat the most serious forms of the disease, have received 182 patients in the past 24 hours, according to figures from Public Health France.

There were 214 on Tuesday, after a peak of 299 admissions over 24 hours for the fourth wave of the pandemic.

Services that stay on

But these services remain in tension with a total of 2,239 patients in intensive care (2,221 Tuesday).

Hospitals currently accommodate 11,171 patients (11,066 Tuesday), with 883 admissions over 24 hours (1,145 Tuesday).

On the other hand, "the situation is dramatic in the overseas territories," added Gabriel Attal, explaining that under-vaccination "is wreaking havoc there".

In the West Indies, "the epidemic situation seems to be stabilizing and receding, but remains very serious".

In Polynesia, the outbreak of contaminations "could quickly cause hospital saturation".
