The local elected officials of Guadeloupe asked this Saturday "a postponement of the start of the school year" which must be held in early September, in view of "the seriousness of the current health situation", linked to the spread of the Delta variant.

The president of the regional council, Ary Chalus, of the departmental council, Guy Losbar, and the president of the association of mayors, Jocelyn Sapotille, after "consultation of several actors of their respective school communities", decided "that the current health context did not allow the start of the new school year on the dates initially envisaged by the State services ”, that is to say the first week of September, they write in a press release.

Elected officials “reaffirm their attachment to the return of children” to school, but “the start of the school year must take place in conditions that allow the health and safety of all to be preserved”, adds the text. The elected officials call for "in-depth consultation with State services, academic authorities and representatives of the school community" in order to decide on a new start to the school year and the modalities of its implementation.

Earlier in the week, the Federation of Parents Associations of Guadeloupe also sent a press release expressing its fears and opposition to the "protocol and operating framework for the start of the school year" and to "the memorandum of the council of 'orientation of the vaccination strategy'. “Enough is enough”, they write. "We are against all forms of compulsory vaccination linked to Covid-19", "against the application of the health pass", "against vaccination campaigns in schools [...] and against the systematic eviction of students in the event of non-contact vaccinated ”.

Parents' associations are also asking for "more digital and human resources to promote learning in a small workforce", but also an evaluation of "actions implemented in schools, such as the half-gauge, the management of the half. -pension, etc.

".

In Guadeloupe, the last two school years have been punctuated by a large number of school closures: first because of the pandemic, but also because of the multiple strikes that the territory has suffered, causing vandalism and blockages.
