At the age of 81, the American painter and photographer known for his highly realistic works and the magnitude of his drawings of faces, Chuck Close, passed away yesterday, as reported by American media.

Close's attorney, attorney John Silberman, confirmed to the New York Times the artist's death, born in 1940 in Monroe, Washington.

Claus was known for his giant drawings of people's faces, including his own. In some of them, he adopted a mosaic pattern, while in others he highlighted details so precise that they appear to the naked eye as if they were photographs.

Among those drawn are US President Bill Clinton, composer Philip Glass, rock star Lou Reed and artist Cindy Sherman.

Since being paralyzed in 1988, Claus has moved only in a wheelchair, but has continued to paint.

His work has been exhibited in major museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art or the Guggenheim Museum in New York, as well as decorated the New York subway tunnels.

But accusations of harassment distorted the artist's image in the latter stages of his life, according to the accusations of a number of women in statements to the American media in late 2017.

Chuck Close denied the accusations, but the National Gallery of Art in Washington dismissed an exhibition in early 2018.
