The
mayor of Gijón, the socialist Ana González
, has announced that Gijón will be left without bulls and without its Begoña Fair, according to the newspaper La Nueva España.
It will not grant an extension to the company Circuitos Taurinos, which is commanded by Carlos Zúñiga, nor will it again take the place out to public competition for the celebration of bullfighting shows in the city.
"It is the competence of the contracting body, which is the Mayor's Office, and the plaza will not be removed. The voices asking that
the bulls not continue
in the city are more and more," explained the councilor during an act at the Trade Fair.
Ana González, underlines, among other arguments, the names of two bulls fought at the last Begoña fair, Daniel Ruiz's livestock,
Feminist
names
and two copies of the
Nigerian
name
. "
Several lines have been crossed
. A city that believes in integration, equality of men and women cannot allow this kind of thing. There are people who would like it to continue, and they have been listened to, now we have to listen to that other part from Gijón. And on top of that, using bulls to display an ideology contrary to human rights. The bulls' contract is over. "
The absurd controversy raised by the name of the bulls, who inherit the name of their mothers, like
Africanus
the day before the bulls were dealt with in the alleged scandal, has reached the zenith of the grotesque.
