To promote patriotism education, the Hong Kong Education Bureau subsidized all kindergartens with HK$3,000 for the purchase of national flags and flag-raising equipment

[Global Times Special Correspondent in Hong Kong, Ye Lan] Recently, the National Flag and National Emblem (Amendment) Bill 2021 was gazetted, and the first and second readings will be held in the Legislative Council on the 18th.

In order to promote patriotic education, the Hong Kong Education Bureau subsidized all kindergartens of HK$3,000 for the purchase of national flags and flag-raising equipment.

According to Hong Kong’s "Oriental Daily" report on the 17th, many kindergartens in Hong Kong have not installed flagpoles for flag-raising and holding flag-raising ceremonies due to the small size of their school buildings and environmental factors.

On the 16th, the Hong Kong Education Bureau announced that it will provide all kindergartens, child care centers and schools with kindergarten classes participating in the "Kindergarten Education Plan" with a subsidy of HK$3,000 to purchase equipment such as national flags and removable flagpoles.

If individual kindergartens have installed national flags and movable flagpoles, they can also use subsidies to purchase or update equipment.

The government will deposit the subsidy directly into the school’s bank account, and the school can use the subsidy until the end of August 2022.

The Education Bureau said that kindergartens should help children understand that Hong Kong is a part of the country, the national flag and the flag-raising etiquette, establish a sense of belonging to the country, and cultivate national identity. At the same time, kindergartens with flags and flagpoles should be reminded to be on New Year's Day, Return Day and National Day. Wait for the day to hoist the national flag and sing the national anthem, and "strongly recommend" the school on important days and special occasions such as school day, open day, graduation ceremony, school anniversary celebrations, Chinese Culture Day, etc.

Since the beginning of this year, the SAR government has pushed hard for patriotic education.

The Chief Executive Carrie Lam stated at the "Hong Kong Patriotism Education Summit Forum" in July that society should be confident in promoting patriotism education in Hong Kong and correcting the values of young people. From the academic year, the "Civilization and Social Development" will replace the Liberal Studies, and the study of the Constitution and Basic Law will be strengthened.

Yang Runxiong, Director of the Education Bureau, stated that he will attach importance to promoting Chinese culture as the focus of patriotic education, strengthen the study of literary classics from primary school, and add classic chapters to the curriculum.

Former Legislative Council President Jasper Tsang also said that the key to patriotic education lies in students’ sense of belonging and identification with the country. After the return, patriotic education is a matter of course, and opportunities for understanding the country’s conditions have also increased. Now the country has many achievements that can be used as materials for patriotic education. .

Recently, a middle school classroom in Yuen Long District, Hong Kong, launched a course with the theme of "Me and National Identity". Watching Olympic short films, looking at pictures to identify celebrities, analyzing historical charts, etc. For freshmen who have just entered the first grade of middle school, the first lesson in middle school makes them feel quite deep. According to a report on Hong Kong's "01" website on the 17th, the Primary School of Hong Kong Peiqiao College also organized students to visit the "Communist Party Centenary Exhibition". The students who visited felt that they had gained a lot and gained a deeper understanding of the Communist Party and Chinese history.
