Reintroducing a predator into an ecosystem, is it a good idea?

For the Pacific coast of Canada, certainly!

In 1970, the country decided to reintroduce the sea otter, which had disappeared in the 19th century due to the trade in its fur.

Eighty-nine otters are thus reintroduced, to the concern of some opponents of the project.

Their fears?

An upheaval of the ecosystem and a collapse of the local fishery.

But this initiative will have had enormous positive effects: regulation of the sea urchin population, development of algal forests, appearance of new species of fish… This chain reaction has in total increased biomass by 37% in this area.

Discover the story of this successful reintroduction and its consequences in the video of our partner Brut.
