• They Were Ten

is a series loosely adapted from the novel of the same title by Agatha Christie.

It is made up of six 52-minute episodes.

The broadcast begins this Tuesday at 9:05 p.m. on M6.

  • Director Pascal Laugier exceeded the allocated budget.

“It was an industrial disaster for my company.

We were exploded financially, ”says producer Sophie Révil who, time having passed, ensures that she does not regret having entrusted this project to this filmmaker.

  • "From an artistic point of view, it was very interesting to find yourself on TV with someone so unconventional," said actor Samuel Le Bihan.

During the virtual press conference of

They were ten

, there was reason to wonder if Pascal Laugier was victim or guilty.

The director of the series freely adapted from Agatha Christie's novel for M6 (see box) was largely absent.

He acted as a corpse in the closet, as if he was the subject not to be brought up.

The game of questions and answers between journalists and actors began to purr, when producer Sophie Révil set foot in the dish.

“I built voodoo dolls with the effigy of Pascal Laugier and I stuck needles in them.

I don't know if he was writhing in pain in his bed.

I hope so.

She said that with a big smile and exaggerating her gestures, just to defuse the violence of the words.

"It was an industrial disaster for my company"

The one who co-founded Escazal Films and notably produced

The Little Murders of Agatha Christie may

have joked, she did not try to hide that working with the filmmaker was a test for her.

In particular because of budget overruns which, in total, are close to 10 million euros.

“It was an industrial disaster for my company.

We have been blown up financially.

This had never happened to me in twenty years of production, it made me more careful, ”she explains frankly.

A little later, Sophie Révil however rounded the corners: “Time having passed, I do not regret having chosen Pascal.

He did something out of the ordinary.

He delivered what was expected of him: magnificent images, tension, an epic side to each character's fate during the flashbacks… ”

On paper, such a director at the controls of a mainstream prime-time series smelled strongly of sulfur (and suffering).

Pascal Laugier comes from genre cinema, but the type to risk turning some of the spectators on their backs.

His films,

Martyrs

in mind, display real biases when it comes to approaching and showing violence and cruelty.

A "feverish" direction

Unsurprisingly, the comedians of

They were ten

told the story of a singular filming experience with the author of

Ghostland

. It was thus "quite scary and touching" for Manon Azem who has "a lot of affection" for the filmmaker: "I had never worked with such a passionate director. I was quite impressed. He had very high standards. He wanted to be proud of this project and these images, so I knew I could trust him. "

"His ambition makes us want to follow him", supported Romane Bohringer, describing the management as "feverish".

Samuel Le Bihan remembered having met the director a little over twenty years ago, on the set

of Xavier Gens'

Pacte des loups

.

Pascal Laugier was in charge of the making-of.

"He is an incredible cinephile, quite radical and very committed to cinema," summed up the actor.

From an artistic point of view, it was very interesting to be on TV with someone so unconventional ”.

And for this reason, Samuel Le Bihan welcomed the choice of Sophie Révil.

Voodoo dolls can be stored in the attic.

The series in six 52-minute episodes is a very free adaptation of

They were ten

, the novel by Agatha Christie published in 1940 in France under the title

Dix Petits N… ..

The plot, which took place in the 1930s, has been carried over to our time.

It takes place in a disused luxury hotel, installed on a desert island (the shooting took place in Guadeloupe), and brings together ten characters (five men and five women and no longer seven men and three women as in the book) who have a priori nothing in common except the fact of hiding each and everyone a heavy secret.

The mechanics of the thriller do not change: the protagonists are murdered one after the other.

Why ?

And above all: by whom?

Questions arise and keep us going until the end of the last episode.
