At least 20 people were killed in the explosion of a fuel tanker in northern Lebanon.

The fuel car had exploded in the Akkar region, the Lebanese Red Cross announced on Sunday in the online service Twitter.

His emergency services recovered 20 bodies and brought about seven injured to hospitals.

Initially, no information was given on the cause of the explosion.

Videos of a large fire were posted on online networks.

Initially, however, the authenticity of the image material could not be proven.

Worst economic crisis in history

In August last year, the explosion of hundreds of tons of improperly stored ammonium nitrate in the port of Beirut destroyed entire quarters of the Lebanese capital and killed 214 people.

6500 other people suffered injuries at the time and around 300,000 people became homeless.

The situation in Lebanon, which is going through the worst economic crisis in its history, was exacerbated by the explosion in the port.

The government can no longer service loans, and large parts of the population have slipped into poverty.

The inflation rate is 120 percent, and even higher for food.

Lots of people try to hoard fuel.

The army took position at gas stations in the country on Saturday and confiscated thousands of liters of gasoline and diesel.
