The appeal materials were submitted to the Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court on August 4, and the Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court sent the relevant materials to the Zhejiang Higher People's Court to initiate procedures such as filing the case.
On July 26, 2021, the Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court issued a public sentence on Xu Guoli's intentional homicide criminal incidental civil lawsuit, and sentenced the defendant Xu Guoli to death for intentional homicide, depriving him of political rights for life; and sentenced him to compensate the plaintiff in the incidental civil lawsuit for economic losses in RMB 200,000 yuan.
The court found that on the evening of July 4, 2020, Xu Guoli always put sleeping pills in the milk that XX drank before going to bed at home. When XX drank and fell asleep on the bed in the bedroom, he used tape to seal the mouth and press the pillow. The way of the nose and mouth caused so-and-so death.
Later, Xu Guoli moved the corpse of XX to the bathroom for mutilation, and then scattered and abandoned.
After committing the crime, the defendant Xu Guoli fabricated false information, falsely claiming that Lai XX was missing and evaded investigation.
On July 22 of the same year, the public security organs screened the septic tank of the community and found part of the human body tissues of XX. The next day, Xu Guoli was arrested and brought to justice.

Xu Guoli deliberately murdered, destroyed the corpse, fabricated false information, and concealed the crime. The subjective malignancy was extremely deep, the criminal methods were extremely cruel, the social harm was great, and the crime was extremely serious. He should be severely punished in accordance with the law.
Fang Zhihua introduced that after the verdict of the first instance of the case was pronounced on July 26, Xu Guoli clearly expressed his dissatisfaction with the verdict. On July 29, he filed an appeal when meeting with the lawyer. The two parties communicated the requirements and content of the appeal.

According to previous reports, Xu Guoli pleaded guilty and repented of his actions when the first instance of the case was heard on May 14, 2021, saying that no matter what the outcome of the first instance verdict, he would not appeal.
