After devastating forest fires on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, heavy rain led to heavy flooding on the Black Sea coast.

The provinces of Kastamonu and Sinop are particularly affected.

It is true that the region is familiar with floods.

But what has happened since Wednesday has never been seen, the Turkish media quote a mayor.

The forest fires that started on July 28th are also considered to be the largest in Turkey's history.

It rained unabated on Thursday. The rain should not let up until Friday. The floods have already killed eleven people, ten of them in Kastamonu, said the disaster control agency Afad. Last year, five people were killed as a result of the floods. The evacuation measures continued unabated in some cities. Helicopters are used for this.

In several localities, people have sheltered on the roofs of their houses. Turkish TV channels show houses that have broken apart in the floods and streets that have turned into raging rivers. They carry cars and other large objects with them. Bridges have collapsed, roads that have become impassable have been closed. The floods caused damage to the electricity supply. More than ten thousand households have no electricity.

On the Mediterranean coast, on the other hand, the situation is easing. With the end of the extreme heat and easing winds, only a few of the more than 230 forest fires are still burning. The fire brigade brought a major fire under control in the southwestern Turkish province of Mugla two weeks after it broke out. Forest Minister Bekir Pakdemirli wrote on Twitter that they are in the process of cooling the area in the Köycegiz district. Most recently, strong winds hindered the fire fighting in the region.
