The landscape in Saxon Switzerland is picturesque.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors come to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains every year.

But although the region lives off the strangers, it apparently has a problem with strangers.

Heidenau is here where xenophobic riots broke out in 2015.

And nowhere was the AfD 2017 more successful.

At that time it was Frauke Petry, the former party leader, who achieved the best result here.

Her successor as a direct candidate of the AfD is the former police officer Steffen Janich.

As the only candidate, he does not want to speak to the FAZ on the trip to Germany.

Neither did Petry.

What are the problems in the region, why is the AfD so successful here?

To find out, we spoke to many who know Saxon Switzerland well - and one who came here as a refugee.

About fears, prejudices, hatred - and the question of whether the AfD could win a direct mandate again here in the Ore Mountains in autumn.

We'll take you on a trip every Monday and Wednesday this summer.

We visited the most successful constituencies of the SPD, FDP, Greens, CDU, Left, AfD and CSU.
