While China is attracting criticism for its repression of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang and Mongolia, the Taiwanese democracy claimed by Beijing has made the opposite choice, to promote its cultural diversity.

First concerned: the indigenous peoples who inhabited Taiwan long before the arrival of settlers from China, 400 years ago.

Elected in 2016, the sovereignist president makes it a political issue, but disappointment lurks within the indigenous communities.
