After reading "Grave Robber Notes", the four thieves temporarily combined the stolen Buddha's head. When the police found the Buddha's head, it was still in good condition.

10 Ming Buddha heads were stolen and "home" after 4 years

Four years ago, in Pangpo Cave, a deep mountain in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, the heads of 10 Buddha statues were missing.

As a local cultural relics protection unit, Pangpo Cave is said to have been a reclusive place for Pangtong's uncle Pang Degong and his wife during the Three Kingdoms period. The stolen Buddha head has a history of about 500 years, which once attracted public attention and was distressing.

The Ministry of Public Security attaches great importance to this major cultural relic case that has caused a national sensation. The Sichuan Provincial Public Security Department has been listed for supervision, and the police in Leshan City and Jiajiang County have continued to carry out investigation work but with little success.

Until a piece of information from detainees brought a turning point.

Now, the head of the Buddha, who has been living for four years, has finally been found, and he has embarked on the road to "home".

All of the 10 Buddha heads that were carved deep into the mountains in the Ming Dynasty were missing.

Pangpo Cave is located in the new rural area of Mucheng Town, Jiajiang County. The lifelike statues of the Ming Dynasty on the cliff are divided into four niches, scattered around the Pangpo Cave site.

According to legend, it was the place where Pang Tong's uncle Pang Degong and his wife lived in seclusion during the Three Kingdoms period.

On the first and fifteenth day of the Lunar New Year, someone would go there to burn incense and worship the Buddha.

On the morning of August 20, 2017, when the 69-year-old father Zhou Faxi of Zhou Mingcheng, a villager living near Pangpo Cave, went home for dinner, he suddenly found that the head of the Pangpo Cave Buddha statue was passive.

Zhou Mingcheng ran over to take a look, and his heart was tense, "It's! The Buddha's head should have been stolen!" He quickly called the police.

Pangpo Cave is located halfway up the mountain. There are four steep cliffs with two platforms in the middle. Between the platforms is a cliff of seven or eight meters high.

There are two rows of Buddha statues carved in the middle and upper part. There are 26 statues in the upper row and 27 statues in the bottom row. There are 53 statues in total, each of which is about 50 cm high.

On the other side of the cliff above, there are several inscriptions.

One of the inscriptions clearly records that the carving of the Pangpo Cave cliff sculpture was completed in the first year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty, that is, 1522 AD.

The latter one is earlier, "Pangpo Cave Notes" written by Zhang Fengyi of Ming Dynasty in the 15th year of Zhengde in Ming Dynasty, that is, 1520 AD.

Below these two inscriptions, there is Shang Yanliu's "Timing Nan'an Pangpo Cave", the last Chinese imperial examination in the late Qing Dynasty.

Based on this calculation, the stolen Buddha head has a history of nearly 500 years.

After the incident, the local cultural relics protection and public security departments quickly rushed to the scene.

A total of 10 Buddha heads were missing, 5 in the upper and lower rows, and there were fresh chisel marks on almost every crack. The preliminary judgment was stolen from the evening of August 19th to the early morning of August 20th.

The 10 stolen Buddha heads were all carved in the Ming Dynasty, and the rock mass was made of red sandstone.

How were these Buddha heads stolen?

According to Deng Wei, head of the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the Jiajiang County Public Security Bureau, according to the preliminary investigation and analysis, the tools for committing crimes may be divided into three categories. , The third is a portable electric hammer tool, because some traces similar to that of an electric hammer were found.

"That's something that our ancestors left us for hundreds of years, and the people's attention is particularly high." Hu Hongshou, deputy magistrate of Jiajiang County and director of the Public Security Bureau, said that due to few clues and great influence, this major cultural relic case with many difficulties , Put the Jiajiang police under heavy pressure.

For more than three years after the incident, the Jiajiang police dare not relax for a moment. They have kept visiting from the surrounding residents to the national cultural relics market, but they have always had little effect.

Collecting the stone stele encounters the temporary combination of the tomb robbers to steal the Buddha's head

The effort paid off. Until the end of 2020, a detainee provided a clue that a person named Alang once showed him a photo with a Buddha head in his hand. The description is about the same size as the Buddha head in Pangpo Cave.

Mentioned the three words "Pangpo Cave", the police were very excited at the time.

After investigation, Yang Bing (nicknamed "A Lang", 36 years old, from Jianyang) has been helping others to collect stone tablets for a long time and running around. He has a relationship with Zhang Haijiao (nicknamed "A Hai", 36 years old, in Bazhong). People), was blocked by Mucheng police station in 2016, when the tomb was unsuccessfully robbed.

The one who collected the stone tablets and the one who robbed the ancient tombs, Yang Bing and Zhang Haijiao, the relationship with the theft of the Buddha's head in Pangpo Cave during the Ming Dynasty rose sharply.

After more than half a year of external investigations, on May 12, 2021, the task force issued an order to implement arrests and arrested the two in Chongqing and Bazhong respectively.

According to Yang Bing's account, in 2017, I saw an article on Jiajiang Pangpo Cave on the Internet, as well as pictures. It looks very good. The most important thing is that Pangpo Cave is remote and inaccessible. There may be no theft. People found out.

Therefore, he met "Ahai", "Glasses" and "Cripple" in a cultural relic group, and the four came to Pangpodong to commit crimes.

According to Yang Bing and Zhang Haijiao's account, they were four people who committed the crime together.

The investigators confirmed the identities of the other two associates-Wang Hua (nicknamed "Glasses", a native of Chongqing); Wu Bo (nicknamed "The Cripple", a native of Panzhihua), and captured them one after another.

"At that time, "Grave Robber Notes" was quite popular. I searched for Xiaowei Jin on QQ and joined such a group." Wang Hua explained that he met Wu Bo through the QQ group, and Wu Bo was more knowledgeable about cultural relics.

After the four temporary bandits stolen the Buddha's head, they did not know its value at all, so they sold it to the antique owner Jiang in Chengdu at a price of more than 10,000 yuan.

After sharing the stolen goods, the four parted ways, until the news of the theft of the Buddha's head in the Ming Dynasty in Pangpo cave caused a sensation.

After 4 years of wandering for thousands of miles, it was still well preserved when found

The police followed the vine and found the antique boss Jiang.

After three days of interrogation, Jiang finally admitted that he had spent more than 10,000 yuan to buy the Buddha's head, but he changed hands and sold it to Fu, an antique dealer in Fujian for 125,000 yuan, and then had no contact with the other party.

According to Chen Yuzong, head of the Serious Case Squadron of the Criminal Investigation Brigade of the Jiajiang County Public Security Bureau, when the police were about to go to Fujian to find Fu, they suddenly received a call from Jiang’s father stating that the Buddha’s head had been found and he was in Chengdu.

On June 11, 2021, the police of the task force arrived at a logistics warehouse in Chengdu with excitement and anxiety.

I opened the box and saw that the Buddha's heads were still there.

"There is a sense of relief and excitement." Chen Yuzong said that after almost four years, he was finally able to see these Buddha heads again. Everyone's efforts were not in vain.

According to the appraisal of cultural relics experts, these 10 Buddha heads have been strayed thousands of miles for 4 years, but they are still well preserved.

The day after the Buddha head returned home, the police from the task force went to Fujian and found Fu who bought the Buddha head.

According to Fu's account, he felt that these Buddha heads were carved very beautifully and artistically, so he spent 125,000 yuan to buy them.

He first tried to make antiques, but the craftsmanship was not good enough, so he didn't find a master so he didn't move.

Hearing Father Jiang said that there was an accident with the Buddha's head, he quickly returned it.

At present, the case is still under investigation.

The Pangpo Cave, hidden in the deep mountains, has long been equipped with monitoring probes and has been guarded by special personnel. The local area has further strengthened publicity and mobilized more villagers to participate in the protection of Pangpo Cave.
