On his arrival this Tuesday evening in Guadeloupe, the Minister of Overseas Territories, Sébastien Lecornu, will find an explosive situation.

Clashes did indeed occur during the night from Sunday to Monday on the island, where containment was established to curb the Covid-19 epidemic, two firefighters having been injured.

The night was punctuated with interventions by firefighters and police forces at many points, on flaming roadblocks and trash fires, said Pointe-à-Pitre prosecutor, Patrick Desjardin.

Several people were arrested, two of them being in police custody.

Projectile throws

"Some roadblocks were difficult to disperse", detailed the public prosecutor, while the firefighters testify to "unidentified projectiles thrown" which injured "two agents in the face and in the eye".

From a police source, these roadblocks are linked to the restrictions in force established to deal with the violent upsurge of the Covid-19 epidemic in Guadeloupe, with partial confinement during the day and a strict curfew in force from 8 p.m. to 5 p.m. time.
