A
confused
group of
deniers
stormed what they thought was the
BBC's
headquarters on Monday
, apparently unaware that the network moved from there almost a decade ago, according to the British daily The Guardian.
Instead of the current headquarters of the
BBC
, which they hold responsible for promoting
Covid-19
vaccines
, a handful of protesters gained access to the Television Center in West London, which
is
now
rented by ITV
to film their daytime shows like
Good Morning Britain.
The building was vacated by the
BBC
in 2013 and has since
been converted into apartments and a private club
.
The BBC maintained three
Studioworks
studios
, which are largely rented out to other broadcasters and provide the permanent base for many of ITV's programs.
However, the vast majority of the
London-based
BBC
staff
and its news operation are located five miles away, at
the corporation's
Broadcasting House
in Portland Place.
The co -
host of
Loose Women
,
Charlene White
, thanked the security team that kept the protesters out of the studio while his program
ITV
was being broadcast live on Monday afternoon.
"I'm not sure what the protesters were hoping to accomplish, but all they would have found was me, Jane, Nadia and Penny in
Loose Women
talking about menopause," he said.
Many of the protesters outside the building appeared to be operating under the belief that they were storming the
BBC
headquarters
connected to their news coverage, with live broadcasts and promotional material for the event mentioning the
building's
BBC
links
.
Among those outside was
Piers Corbyn
, the brother of the former Labor Party leader, who was recorded on a live broadcast saying "we have to get hold of these bastards", while other people at the protest described the media such as "viruses" and criticized the
BBC's
coverage of the
coronavirus pandemic.
Hundreds of people outside the studio building chanted "what a shame", with small altercations between the
Metropolitan Police officers
who were guarding the entrance to the studios, although other protesters intervened to try to avoid altercations.
Police reinforcements and a helicopter were subsequently deployed, while a smaller group of protesters
later marched to Broadcasting House
in central London.
The BBC has had to deal with a growing number of verbal and physical attacks on its journalists by
denialist
protesters
, including
Newsnight's
political editor
Nick Watt was attacked outside Downing Street earlier this year.
BBC News Director Fran Unsworth has warned that targeting her journalists is a growing problem and has urged staff to get training on how to deal with this violence.
