The new version of the musical classic

West Side Story

by the Belgian theater director Ivo van Hove will not return on Broadway.

Van Hove's music theater piece premiered in February 2020, but has not been shown since the corona pandemic because American theaters had to close their doors.

It's a "painful and difficult" decision, producer Kate Horton said in a statement.

In total, the show was shown for a few weeks.

The musical soon became a hit.

The first six Broadway Theater previews brought in more than $1.2 billion.

According to American media, that was an exceptional amount for a piece that was still in the try-out period.

West Side Story

is a free adaptation of

Romeo and Juliet

and is set in New York.

The story centers on Tony and Maria who belong to two rival youth gangs (the Sharks and the Jets).

Despite the differences, they fall in love with each other.
