The prize is awarded to a person who has made a "special original contribution to the contemporary film industry".
Previous recipients include Al Pacino, Spike Lee and Agnès Varda.
Ridley Scott will receive the award in Venice on September 10, just before the screening of his new film "The last duel", in which Matt Damon plays Adam Driver.
"The last duel" gets its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
