Italy arrests mafia boss while traveling to Spain

Yesterday, Italian authorities arrested Maria Lichardi, a mafia boss in Naples, while she was trying to travel to Spain, local media reported.

Known as "La Piccoleta" because of her short stature, the 70-year-old is the sister of Gennaro Lichardi, the late founder of the Camorra family gang in the outskirts of Scambia and Secondiliano.

She had previously spent eight years in prison, and was released in December 2009, according to media reports, before she took over the operation of the family gang.

Local news agencies reported that Italian authorities stopped Lichardi at Rome's Ciampino airport while she was handing over her bags before a flight to Spain, where her daughter lives.

She is accused of committing mafiosi, extortion, receiving money illegally and forgery in public auctions.
