The Italian authorities have arrested a 70-year-old woman who was wanted as a Mafia boss in Rome.

The police arrested the alleged member of a Camorra clan on Saturday at Ciampino Airport in Rome, as reported by Italian media.

She was reportedly on the way to Malaga in Spain.

The 70-year-olds are accused of membership in a mafia association and extortion.

An arrest warrant from the Naples Public Prosecutor had been issued against her.

According to media reports, she was on the way to see her daughter.

During the arrest, she remained calm when the officers showed her the order.

Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese congratulated the police on the arrest.

"'A Piccerella" (dialect for: the little one) was considered to be the head of an influential Camorra clan in the Naples area.

The mafia is mainly active there in the drug trade.

One of her brothers was destined to take over the hegemony with the clan in the structurally weak area during the 1980s, but died early in prison, as Mafia expert and journalist Roberto Saviano wrote in the Sunday edition of "Corriere della Sera".

Two other brothers and the alleged Mafia lady herself took over the management of the family. According to Saviano, their rules were caution and ruthlessness.
