A man who is said to have wounded 10 people in a knife attack on a commuter train in Tokyo late Friday told police that he was enraged when he saw "happy looking" women and wanted to kill them, Japanese media said yesterday.

Police have arrested the 36-year-old in another area of ​​Tokyo after he stabbed people in the attack, which took place around 8:40 pm on a train on the Odakyo Line in the western part of the city, media said.

One of the victims, a university student, was seriously injured, while the rest suffered less serious injuries.

Sankei newspaper reported that the suspect told the police: "I started feeling about six years ago that I wanted to kill women who looked happy, anyone who looked fine, I just wanted to kill a lot of people."
