Even people infected with the new coronavirus will be able to donate blood four weeks after the symptoms disappear.

Regarding blood donations from people infected with the new coronavirus, the Japanese Red Cross Society has postponed acceptance because the risk of spreading the infection through blood transfusion cannot be denied.

By the end of May, a total of 1142 people nationwide had declined blood donation offers.

Since it is equivalent to thousands of people annually, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare held an expert group last week to discuss how to deal with it.

As a result, it was decided that even infected people would be accepted for blood donation if the symptoms disappeared and four weeks had passed, as the risk of infection through blood transfusion was not reported at home and abroad.

People who have no symptoms will be accepted for blood donation if four weeks have passed since the day when the sample was collected in the positive test.

Based on the fact that the government requires 10 days from the onset of the disease at the time of discharge, the period has been set longer to ensure safety, and we will inform the relevant organizations in the future.
