Strengthen the pelvic floor.
A chair does the exercises for you
Kegel exercises
can sound boring, repetitive, annoying ... and many may wonder what they are really for.
No woman may find the idea of getting into 'intimate fitness' routines attractive, whose main use is to prevent
urinary incontinence,
especially when she still sees the possibility of having this problem one day as remote.
That is why it is more than curious to see how indifference turns into interest when hearing that they can also contribute to having
more
pleasant
sexual relations
, both for her and for her partner.
The truth is that when the Californian gynecologist
Arnold Kegel
proposed the exercises that bear his name in 1947, he was not thinking about improving
anyone's
sex life
.
His interest was focused on a disorder,
urinary incontinence,
to which no doctor had paid attention until then (overall, it was a "female problem").
Strengthen the pelvic floor and prevent incontinence
The thing is that approximately one in three women
over 50
and 18% of those between 26 and 45 suffer from urinary incontinence, according to data from the Swedish company
Intimina,
dedicated to taking care of aspects of female intimate health.
A problem that although it is not exclusive affects especially due
to the 'wear' of the pelvic floor
caused by both childbirth and the hormonal changes that occur during menopause.
And, also, although it is less known, for the practice of some sports.
What are Kegel exercises?
Basically these exercises consist
of contracting and relaxing the pelvic floor muscles
helping with breathing.
They are very simple and it is enough to dedicate five or 10 minutes a day to them, because the key for them to work is in perseverance.
That is why it is best to do several sessions of five minutes each throughout the day, and
be completely calm
when we get to it, to be fully aware of the movement and do it well;
if not, they will not be useful.
Kegel is still very topical
Kegel's proposal, namely that it could improve this drawback exercising the
muscles
of the
pelvic floor
-the holding all structures of the pelvic cavity:
uterus, bladder, rectum
...- is more valid than ever, and not only as a treatment, but also as a prevention.
In fact, the preparation of these muscles should begin when girls are adolescents and continue throughout life.
This would prevent problems during
pregnancy
,
postpartum
,
menopause
and even in the
elderly.
We must not forget that what we are working on when we practice these exercises are
muscles
and like any muscle, keeping it in shape is easier if we start doing it when we are young.
Drawer.
Two birds with one stone
But Kegel exercises have, over time, brought to light another much more pleasant application: when the woman puts them into practice, it activates the
circulation
of the
vaginal walls,
which makes her
'feel' more.
We often hear that there are no nerve endings in the vagina and therefore no pleasure is felt in it.
That's silly.
And if not, ask women whether or not they notice something when they undergo a gynecological examination ... What happens is that we have gone from ignoring the existence of the clitoris to giving it a unique role.
For
Jen Gunter,
author of the great
'The Vagina Bible'
(Dome Books), Kegel exercises can be used, among other things, to solve difficulties in reaching
orgasm
or in the face of
weak orgasm.
Explains this gynecologist that the pelvic floor muscles, in fact,
involuntarily contract
during orgasm an average of
3 to 15 times.
The more
trained
and
strong you
are, the greater the contraction and the
greater the pleasure.
Activating the vaginal walls is also very useful in menopause, when they suffer from a
lack of lubrication
and 'aging'.
And with Kegels we activate circulation helping to
delay
this
deterioration
.
Let's not forget that menopause appears at ages when women are still sexually active.
More good news: these exercises can also increase
male pleasure;
Obviously, when the woman learns to contract the walls of the vagina she also provides more sexual satisfaction to her partner.
Don't you remember how Kegel exercises were done?
My partner
Marisa del Bosque
recently told about it in this Yo Dona article.
