According to the authorities, at least ten people were killed in a serious traffic accident in the southern US state of Texas near the Mexican border.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of a minibus suddenly turned right at too high a speed, drifted off the lane and hit a power pole and a stop sign, the Texas state police said.

The driver and nine passengers were killed and 20 inmates injured were brought to various hospitals.

The accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon (local time, 11 p.m. CEST) near the town of Encino in the Brooks district, around 80 kilometers north of the border town of McAllen.

US media had previously spoken of eleven dead.

According to the police, the passengers were mainly migrants, reported the broadcaster WFAA.

It is still unclear whether the transport of people is to be seen in connection with organized gangs of smugglers.
