Drummer of the

Rolling Stones

, Charlie Watts, could not be part of the upcoming tour of the band by the

United States, which was postponed this year because of the coronavirus pandemic since recovering from a medical procedure.

A statement from Watts' spokesman issued on Wednesday explains that the drummer's doctors advised him to rest and recover from

the medical procedure

, which was successfully resolved.

The statement does not specify what the procedure was.

"For once, my timing is a bit off," Watts said in the statement.

"I am working hard to be fully fit, but today I have accepted, on the advice of the experts, that

this will take a while

."

In 2004, Watts overcame throat cancer, despite quitting in the late 1980s.

Watts and the rest of the band members, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, are

in their 70s

.

The British band has toured over 40, making the quartet

one of the longest-running and most successful rock groups

of all time.

Steve Jordan

, who is also a drummer and has worked on Richards 'solo projects, will take the stage in Watts' place, Reuters reports.

A few weeks ago, the band announced rescheduled dates for their US tour, which will now begin in September.

Mick Jagger

underwent

heart valve replacement surgery

in 2019 and returned to the stage after two months when the Rolling Stones began a delayed North American tour.
