The situation of the University Hospital of Martinique is very critical.

The number of positive cases for Covid-19 is increasing sharply and the intensive care unit is saturated.

Tents also had to be set up last week to regulate the flow of the many patients affected by the virus, reports

, Monday.

In order to cope with this dramatic situation, the hospital had to call in reinforcements from the army.

“This deployment will take place in two stages.

First, August 2, where we will project all the material with a first series of 36 specialists.

And then a complement on August 7, with the rest of the specialists ”, specified Colonel Pascal Lanni, spokesperson for the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces.

The armies are there to protect the French.

"The situation forces us to deprogram surgical interventions"

In total, about fifty specialists, including resuscitators, left the Orleans air base to fly to Martinique.

During the first flight, the soldiers took with them a load of auxiliary equipment as well as ten resuscitation beds.

"The rapid increase in the need will exceed the medical and resuscitation capacities of the CHU, to the detriment of the treatment of patients with other pathologies", indicated the management of the Martinique CHU.

“The situation forces us to deprogram surgical interventions and postpone certain hospitalizations, while guaranteeing emergencies and oncology.

"

This is not the first time that medical reinforcements from the armed forces have been mobilized.

They had already been deployed in Guyana for two months.

Their intervention made it possible in particular to take care of 50 patients seriously affected by Covid-19.
