A week after the explosion and the fire in a Leverkusen hazardous waste incineration plant, another dead person was found in the area of the accident.

The victim had been identified, a spokeswoman for the Cologne public prosecutor confirmed on Tuesday.

The massive detonation killed at least six people - according to the Cologne police, one person is still missing.

The investigations by the Cologne police are ongoing on the large area of the Chempark in Leverkusen. The public prosecutor's office is investigating unknown persons on suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent causing of an explosion. According to the Chempark operator Currenta, the clearing and salvage work will take a long time. First of all, the WDR reported.

Most recently, the Cologne district government announced which substances were released in the accident. It was therefore a question of waste from an agro-chemical production, the main component of which was “chemicals containing phosphorus and sulfur”. However, it is still unclear whether these represent a health risk. More samples would be taken. Until a final clarification, the precautionary measures for residents should be maintained. This includes, for example, not eating fruit and vegetables from the garden or touching contaminated surfaces.
