Iran, which denies being behind a deadly attack on an oil tanker Thursday in the Arabian Sea, warned Monday August 2 that it would respond to any "adventurism" if it were to be targeted.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to protect its security and national interests," Iranian Foreign Affairs spokesperson Said Khatibzadeh said.

He also promises, in a statement, that his country "would respond immediately and decisively to any possible adventurism".

Israel, the United States and the United Kingdom said on Sunday they believed Iran was behind the attack off Oman on Mercer Street, an oil tanker operated by Israeli interests, and which caused the death of a Briton and a Romanian on board.

Tehran has denied any involvement, believing that "the Zionist regime (Israel, Editor's note) must stop (launching) such unfounded accusations," Said Khatibzadeh said Sunday.

"Iran will not hesitate for a moment to defend its interests and its national security."
