[First-line story]

At the National Library, a training on commonly used online shopping apps is underway.

In the 2-hour training, elderly readers learned in detail how to download the App, how to register an account, bind a bank card, how to place an order, and practice the operation with the help of volunteers.

An aunt named Shi Ziying said happily: “It’s too inconvenient to live alone in the old community. Buying groceries is too inconvenient. In the future, when you place an order online, the takeaway will deliver it directly to your door, saving much effort and improving your life. Quality!"

This is a scene that took place in the “Caring for the Sunset” class for the elderly at the National Library of China.

With the progress of society, we find that the spiritual and cultural needs of the elderly are getting higher and higher. Many elderly people have the desire to learn, but they cannot find credible and effective institutions and platforms.

Therefore, since 2011, the National Library of China has actively explored special service models suitable for elderly readers, and has successively carried out 15 series of activities including public welfare training for elderly readers, resource recommendations, and reading salons for elderly readers. The cumulative number of elderly readers has reached more than 26,000.

In November 2014, in response to the needs of the digital age, the National Library of China launched the "Caring for the Sunset" class for the elderly, focusing on "computer direct train", "mobile convenience station", "light and shadow space", "delicious life", "healthy station", "finger miracle". Nearly 300 training sessions were carried out on 8 themes such as "National Quintessence Shengxiang" and "Guotu Yanyi", helping more than 1,000 elderly people to smoothly integrate into the intelligent society.

On the basis of training, we actively explore diversified forms of service, and take advantage of opportunities such as World Book Day and Double Ninth Festival to carry out a series of theme activities to enrich the lives of elderly readers.

During the 7 years of service, I have met many uncles and aunts who love to learn, and have become friends with them.

We are honored to be able to do our part for them.

Aunt Liu Ying was a doctor before she retired.

During the new crown pneumonia epidemic in early 2020, young doctors from the hospital where she worked went to Wuhan to support the fight against the epidemic.

The aunt was very moved, so she used the video editing knowledge she learned in the senior class to make a short video for the colleagues who were about to leave to cheer for everyone.

The aunt said that thanks to learning these useful skills, she can also contribute a little to the fight against the epidemic.

Many elderly readers have told us that their lives have changed a lot since participating in the "Caring for the Sunset" class for the elderly.

When traveling, you can use mobile phone photography skills to take better-looking photos. You can also use software to beautify the photos and cut the photos into small videos; you can also book hotels, air tickets, and taxis online when you go out alone. Go; the children are busy at work and learn to shop online by themselves, which can reduce the burden on the children; some uncles and aunts have already become volunteers in the community to teach other elderly people to use smartphones.

For the elderly, these changes will not only make their life more convenient in their later years, but also make them full of confidence in themselves. They will not be afraid of the information society and new things as before, but can also enjoy the intelligent society. The convenience brought, the later life is more colorful.

At present, there are relatively few public welfare institutions and organizations focusing on information services for the elderly in my country, which cannot meet the huge needs of the elderly.

Last year, the General Office of the State Council issued the "Implementation Plan on Effectively Solving the Difficulties of the Elderly in Using Intelligent Technology". It is a good start. I hope that the relevant policies will be more complete and the service system will be more complete, so that more elderly people can master digital tools and have a happy old age.
